History

On August 2, 1961, Rev. Doyle Suits brought to the attention of First Baptist Church of Smithville, the prospect of a mission in the West End community of Smithville. This was the beginning of Calvary Baptist Church.

After months of prayer and consideration First Baptist Church voted November 17, 1963 to purchase the property owned by the Church of God on the old Nashville Highway West. The property was to be a mission sponsored by First Baptist Church, with the help of the Southern Baptist Board.

Westside Baptist Mission opened its doors for worship June 7, 1964. There were seven people to join West Side Baptist Mission that day. On June 28, 1970 West Side Baptist was constituted as Calvary Baptist Church.

During the late 70s Calvary Baptist Church built a new parsonage and voted to sell the church building to the Catholic Church and move to 219 West Main Street. During the 1980s new ministry and growth began to take place.

In December 1995, Calvary voted to purchase property located on Foster Road. On March 7, 2004, a ground breaking ceremony was held at the Foster Road property and construction began. The first worship services at the new Calvary Baptist Church location were held December 5, 2004.

Many lives have been transformed by the gospel at Calvary. We are excited to see how God continues to move and lead us for his glory.
